WGOD #44 -GODCAST 1992 -Live Remote From Joel's

Touted at the time as the most diverse W.G.O.D. tape yet,Joel's influence on this podcast is far-reaching. Joel,Phil,Vance and I ,pick the songs, and you listen intently.I, as your DJ, let you know what's playing! In 2 parts,as the whole thing would not fit on a disc(if that's your intention).A really good set of great music, all of which is timeless. If you want more of WGOD ,please leave me comments, and I'll try to post more. There are literally hundreds of tapes like this one in the vault. If I had an I-Pod ,WGOD would be on that thing all day, every day!

CAT MACHINE - Brilliant Grimace

Just the core trio of Ed,Joel,Tony and special guest Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, who sings most awesomely on a totally tubular number called ,"Nub Rock".Chipmonk was not here this day.Jerry Lee makes a brief appearance,Mr. Rogers is here ,too, for a few seconds.Gramps makes a few guest appearances, and you get good songs in between, like "Align Period Showcase" ,"Space Case" ,"Unsuitable Job" ,"Tree House" , and Tony crooning like Frankie Sinatra on "I Don't Like It Like This" ,accompanied by suitably loungy music.Lots of funny moments on here, recorded February 5th,1991, 20 years ago ,today! And how about the Satan Grimace ,looking down on the biology model Grimace!Stay tuned for the continuation of this year-long series!

TANKOTA 4 - The Discipline Of Earth

The final (at least for now) Tankota album, recorded sometime in the 90's.The line-up on this one is: Ed - guitars, koto, cheese grater, brush, wrench / Joel - guitars, pen, mallet, transistor / Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown - percussion, koto, guitar, flute, kazoo. More subdued than earlier releases, but still noisy in it's own right.Thinking man's music, here folks.Something you can throw on while on a drive,or during the shit/shave/shower ritual,or even while jogging!Doesn't really harsh on your mellow, man.Good band while they lasted,an off-shoot,or outgrowth,if you will,of the much larger guitar orchestra,The Apocalyptic Centurions.Need a re-group,boys!

CAT MACHINE - 21st Century Spastic Soggy Big Gulp

Cryptic song titles, lead to cryptic lyrics, lead to cryptic music, which sounds nothing at all like Cryptic Slaughter! This is a weird one, like these guys were on a different drug on this day,1/29/1991.Ed,Joel,Tony and Chipmonk, with special guest Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, lead you down the cryptic path of cryptosity, with this collection of out-there tunes. Some highlights are:"She's Bonkin' It",the follow-up to their hit,"Bonk Fever","That Kind Of Woman","Balls Over Choo Choo","Bike In The Fuckin' Haus",which is a Gramps appearance, and an impromptu acapella version of,"Reminiscing",by some 70's light pop group whose name I can't recall at the moment.Very weird stuff here, you may need to imbibe heavily for this 'un!

CAT MACHINE - A Chip Off The Old Monk

This tape marked the first appearance of Chipmonk, who became a full fledged member, played out live with Cat Machine, even helped found One Fell Swoop, along with Joel and Ed,and played in many Sluggisha bands, before joining The Apples In Stereo! Chipmonk sings some great songs here,"Rat Ranglers" and "Has Anybody Seen My Pants?".Special guests on this tape were:Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, with his vocal finesse on ,"Woman Burger" , and "Hole In The Wall" , Chris Nicholson's rendition of ,"Summer Job", plus Chuck Connell and Billy Drake. Joel's vocals here are some of his best, including,"Man About Town" , "Impatient Years" and ,"The Defiant Ones".Tony croons in his own style to,"Moon Over Mannequins" ,"Treachery Rides The Range" and,"Sinister Desires".Ed's sermon ,"Thoughts On Capitalism (Greed)",and a "Mr. Rogers" impersonation,as well as the stompers ,"Boiling In The Bathtub" and " Barfly Cannibal", kinda defines the Cat Machine sound.Chuck has a go at it with ,"Chuck's Ghetto, parts 1 and 2",and Billy is on like King Kong.A great release (their 19th!),kinda setting you up for what comes next, more hit pop tunes! In 2 parts, get it now!!!!!!!!!!!

CAT MACHINE - Potsie Rimjob

Bet you thought the album title from the last Cat Machine album I posted was gross! This one is a very close second.Ed , Tony, and Joel (who joined in on side 2),with special guests,Billy Drake,Shane Carwile,Sean Sommers, and Dave "Antelope Leaps",which is a whole other story. The first appearance of,"Rainbow Shower" (a live staple),pieces about local scenesters, specifically Joe Willa, and Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown, and Sean doing an annoying Rollins impression,on a cover of,"We Have Come To Kill You".Pretty good show, here,I somehow fit it all in one zip this time!

EPHEDRINE SYMPHONY-live at the draft house tavern,1/13/93

Hey,it's these guys 4th gig ever, before delving into the full-fledged Fall worship, tho' a Fall song is covered here,at least lyrically. Also ,"The Draft House Theme",the last track here,is based on a Tim Buckley number, and is great!Kinda free-jazz,beat-poet,beatnik punk, that you can really wrap your head around.Check it out,we play at midnite!.Get the other 2 live sets ,previously posted, where we really get down and dirty with a bunch of The Fall tunes(and a Burl Ives song!).This is really cool,I think you shall dig!Me on keys,Joel (as Mark E. Smith)on vocals,Vance bass,Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown on sax,Sean Burch percussion.

CENTRIFUGE

kinda pickin' up where KIKE(same line-up) left off,and sounding even more drugged than usual at some points, also for some reason reminds me of a modern day pink floyd.fucking cool ass shit here folks,do not miss it.tony, vance, joel, and i think phil plays sax on a few numbers.at moments mellow, rockin',even a few black/death metal like tunes, where the vox go to cookie monster growl.for the most part though, just pleasantly euphoric, make you smile type of tuneage.i think this is everything they ever recorded,

EPHEDRINE SYMPHONY or "The Fall"jr.-WE PLAY AT MIDNITE!!

One of the greatest American "The Fall" cover bands, they existed for only a few months, and even then, only in a live context. These recordings were done at the world famous "Draft House"and included such local luminaries in it's ranks as, Joel Rizzo,( as Mark Smith),Ed Wood (me),Vance Burdge,Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown,Hippie Sean,Billy Drake,Mike Brophy,Eric Triglet, and more.

Since Joel is the biggest Fall fan in the U.S ,forming this band was a natural. All
members practiced alone at home and then performed as a group on the evenings of our shows.dude we had people goin off in the draft house.we ruled for a few months and then faded out to obscurity.

thanks to gary, the owner of said bar,and the great and receptive audience.we once again make our mark (smith),ha ha. see ya soon, GOD.
