ONE FELL SWOOP with BLACK NERD - Live at the Draft House 1/31/1992

This is a re-post of a previously posted tape.(back in 2009) This time I give you the flyer for the actual show ,with our original logo and mascot(see above, duh!),plus Billy and Shane were at the Edison Mall ,handing out flyers to the show ,and Dave from Wendy's ,was on a book signing tour ,and Billy handed him a flyer ,which he then placed on the table in front of him.It can be seen in the pic above ,which was on the front page of our local ,Ft. Myers News-Press newspaper! How's that for publicity? The following is from the original posting ,where all is explained!:

Me,Joel and Chipmunk,in our little alt-rock trio,me and Chip on guitars,Joel on drums, except when he sings,me on drums,we all sing, mostly me.i wrote the lyrics and we cover,Flamin'Groovies, the Fall,Syd Barrett,Hendrix,Stooges,Sonic Youth,Led Zeppelin, and Black Flag.Kinda Electric Eels style,no bass, just guitars.we sound much different live, with a real drum kit, instead of our usual kit(see other One Fell Swoop posts for details)and the flyer on the other post is for this show ,the flyer on this post is for a show a week later,Black Nerd opened for us(re-posted below!),and we had a big crowd of locals who were rather pissed at my intro to"Red Letter Day"when i razz Nirvana for their sell out video(smells like...)on mtv at the time, lots of folks walked out after i make my comments,oh well, they missed the rest of a hell of a good show!We aquired a residence as the house band at the Draft House for some time after this.I was the one who got them to let us play and start a scene in our crappy little town.Kinda busted open the floodgates for a million embryo alt rock bands and punks to play and hang out, before that downtown was just drunken bums hangin at the bar.Lots more live tapes to come. The first track is an improv, which we usually used to apply to a regular set list,we'd always do a few improv jams.A fine document of a fantastic band, stay tuned for more! The flyer also lists the next show to be posted ,from 2/1/1992 ,with Stimpy!! Coming soon!

ONE FELL SWOOP - First Gig Practice Tape

This is a re-post of the practice for the first One Fell Swoop gig!(originally posted May 7,2010).
Recorded live, 1/23/1992,(20 years ago ,today!), at Gramps, the Cat Machine house, and the typewriter case, pizza pan drum rim, hammer and pliers drumset is in full-effect.The first half is originals, the second half we cover: the Flamin' Groovies(twice), the Fall, Hendrix(2 hits), and Kiss. The between song banter is good for a few guffaws, and we were still re-learning these songs, picked from several sessions. Good for what it is. The song," I Need Cash",swipes a Kike riff! The first gig led to a residency as the "house" band of the Draft House, (for a few months), we actually cracked downtown wide open ,bringing in opening acts ,and making a place for kids to hang out ,and see and hear local and out-of-area bands. Before that ,there wasn't really any venues for punk/alternative bands to play. Art by Eric J. This has been posted for nearly 2 years ,and only 10 downloads? Well ,now that I've fit it into the sequence of tapes ,posted in order of their recording dates ,maybe more of you will get to hear this!

THE DISPARATE COGSCIENTI - Manchester Compilation

This goes out to my pal Joel ,cuz I know he would be totally into this! Mark E. Smith , vocalist for The Fall , compiled a bunch of his favorite hometown ,weirdo bands ,for this record. The tracks span from 1978-1988. This was originally released on Smith's own imprint ,Cog Sinister Ltd. ,and I believe he uses the pseudonym "Cog Sinister" ,and plays with one of the bands featured here!(Andrew Berry).Later on, Smith licensed this to Rough Trade Records. Really cool, weird and downright rockin' ,in a Manchester kind of way.

CAT MACHINE -Brave The Green Channel

Titled after the pool at Cat Machine House, which was always green with algae.Lots of cryptic titles, and bizarre music. There are the obligatory covers of ,The Fall and The Stooges. If you've been riding this train since the beginning of this year-long series, you know what to expect. If you're new to this underground,outsider,cult-band,I'd suggest you start anywhere, and be sure to get all their great releases!Ed,Tony,Joel,Chipmonk and Billy 3/16/1991,live to boombox,at Gramps'(who appears on the track,"Buncha Bikes").

CAT MACHINE -The Lively Set

On this, their 16th album,Ed,Joel, and Tony ,are not graced with any special guests. The original outsider trio, bash away at songs like,"Link In The Food Chain" , "The Man Who Finally Died" , "The Whip Hand" , "Hoodlum Priest" ,and more. The best version of,"Bonk Fever" ,is here, with some xtra bonk beats, and Scratch Acid gets covered, church organ preacher style,on,"Mary Had A Little Drug Problem".There are also a number of spoken pieces, done by each of the boys, and a couple of those ,"everyone read something different" numbers, "Calling The Kettle Black" , and " 3 Mark Smiths-ah" ,which we do in a roundhouse style.Laying the groundwork for the next 35 or so releases.Profound, eclectic, bizarre, underground, outsider, cult band,punk,alt-rock ,are all labels you can pin on this band.Always there ,when you need a lift.Recorded on Jan.12th,1991 ,20 years ago, straight to boombox,at Joel's room in Cat Machine house. 2 parts.

SCARS -Your Attention Please (Flexi-Disc,live spring 1980)

A rare flexi-disc from i-D magazine,a London fashion publication, from 1980.This version is live, and a studio version later appeared on their one and only album,"Author,Author!".Based on a Peter Porter poem,it addresses nuclear war.A self-proclaimed "literary art-punk" band ,Mark Smith of the Fall, once named them as his favorite group,"because they are the exact opposite of the Fall".A relic to be treasured.

EPHEDRINE SYMPHONY-live at the draft house tavern,1/13/93

Hey,it's these guys 4th gig ever, before delving into the full-fledged Fall worship, tho' a Fall song is covered here,at least lyrically. Also ,"The Draft House Theme",the last track here,is based on a Tim Buckley number, and is great!Kinda free-jazz,beat-poet,beatnik punk, that you can really wrap your head around.Check it out,we play at midnite!.Get the other 2 live sets ,previously posted, where we really get down and dirty with a bunch of The Fall tunes(and a Burl Ives song!).This is really cool,I think you shall dig!Me on keys,Joel (as Mark E. Smith)on vocals,Vance bass,Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown on sax,Sean Burch percussion.

EPHEDRINE SYMPHONY or "The Fall"jr.-WE PLAY AT MIDNITE!!

One of the greatest American "The Fall" cover bands, they existed for only a few months, and even then, only in a live context. These recordings were done at the world famous "Draft House"and included such local luminaries in it's ranks as, Joel Rizzo,( as Mark Smith),Ed Wood (me),Vance Burdge,Philbert Ze Chocolat Clown,Hippie Sean,Billy Drake,Mike Brophy,Eric Triglet, and more.

Since Joel is the biggest Fall fan in the U.S ,forming this band was a natural. All
members practiced alone at home and then performed as a group on the evenings of our shows.dude we had people goin off in the draft house.we ruled for a few months and then faded out to obscurity.

thanks to gary, the owner of said bar,and the great and receptive audience.we once again make our mark (smith),ha ha. see ya soon, GOD.
